Il Presidente
Monacelli, Janare, sono sempre stati protagonisti, protagoniste di racconti e storie, narrate sull’isola, in epoche remote e riportate dai ricercatori come favole popolari.
Il documento che segue, integralmente riportato e che pare smentire questo approccio, è stato ritrovato tra le carte della famiglia Parascandola di Procida. Ringrazio gli eredi per la gentile concessione a riprodurlo.
È un documento eccezionale, per la qualità indiscutibile del testimone e per quel che testimonia: fatti e e forze, simili, agiscono anche fuori dall’isola, in questo caso appena qualche anno fa, ma in un contesto simile, per nulla cambiato, durante un’elezione presidenziale, da qui l’interesse e l’attualità di questa testimonianza.

Conosco l’ultima veggente di Procida, l’unica ancora in grado di leggere il “quadriddo “(vedi note).
Credo che nessuno sappia che – l’Araba – ancora coltivi quest’arte e quando verrà il momento e la figlia potrà capire, ne trasmetterà a lei i segreti, come ha fatto sua madre e la madre di sua madre e così via indietro nel tempo per generazioni e generazioni fin dall’origine oscura.
Quanto segue è il resoconto di alcune delle “interrogazioni” alle quali mi ha concesso di assistere. Permesso accordatomi a condizione che mai, per nessuna ragione, dovrò rivelare la sua identità.
Perciò posso dire solo questo: il rito avviene in una vecchia casa contadina sul limitare d’uno di quei piccoli viottoli che, smarrito il mare, si perdono sotto il cielo dell’isola ed un po’ si somigliano tutti, segnati, da un lato, da sterpaglie, che proteggono antichi campi e dall’altro, l’avviluppo in macchia inestricabile di sfatti limoneti.
È una casa, fatta d’un unico locale a volta, com’è tipico delle vecchie case contadine, il grande focolare, da una parte e dall’altra, un letto matrimoniale, con spalliere in bronzo, quella ai piedi con ai lati due minuscoli fauni cornuti dai piedi di capra, anch’essi in bronzo nero e che paiono pronti a balzar fuori nella campagna.
Subito dopo l’ingresso, l’Araba, ha fatto installare una grande vetrata che aderisce alla volta, con una linea semicircolare perfetta, sigillando, in tal modo, senza tralasciare alcun spiraglio, l’ambiente interno.
L’ Araba, conduce una vita normale, sposata, lavora sul continente, ma, quando viene qui, cambia e si trasforma.
– Quel che si legge in questo oggetto, – mi dice, in premessa al rito, mostrandomi il quadriddo con il vetro che protegge una figura femminile a mezzobusto, dal volto dolce ed ieratico e che porge un mazzo di spighe e papaveri – è l’unica vera realtà. Quel che sta fuori è semplicemente apparenza e finzione, un riflesso distorto dell’essenza profonda di essa. Le persone vive, qui le vedi per quel che realmente sono, spesso, già morte. È una realtà che va interpretata, come quando si vedono i morti, vivi, ma questo, tu, lo sai. –
Ricopre l’oggetto d’un candido telo bianco, poi soggiunge, come in tensione: – Ora, devi stare al di là di questa vetrata, poiché nello spazio che imprigiona il “quadriddo “ e imprigiona anche me, nessun altro può sostarvi, senza pericolo, durante il rito. Quel che vedrò, io, tu vedrai. Ricordati però di questo: non innamorarti di me! Mai! –
Sussurra, quest’ultimo comando, pianissimo, quando già s’è rinchiusa al di là della vetrata, pure punge le mie orecchie come l’eco fragoroso d’un mare perturbante. Poi accende il fuoco e il suo bel viso affilato s’arrossa, lampeggiano i sui occhi, tra i capelli, neri, scarmigli.
D’un attimo si spoglia e statua sinuosa, nuda bruna carne ammaliante, sale sul letto, afferra il quadriddo e lo scopre. Seduta, incrociate le gambe, le spalle rivolte a me, solleva l’oggetto e prende a fissarlo ed io subito vedo quel che lei vede.
Ho visto un lungo paese percorso e percosso da un nervoso, sfibrante, fermento.
Si era in procinto, in quel paese, di eleggere il Presidente, il monarca, il garante, il – Pdr – cioè colui che nei prossimi sette anni a venire avrebbe retto le sorti della Parrocchietta; affermare che avrebbe retto forse è esagerato: sorretto, aiutato accompagnato, benedetto, garantito, visionato, diramato, elucubrato, rinviato, puntualizzato, timbrato; va bé colui che avrebbe eccetera eccetera.
Il lungo paese, da Canicattì alle cime dell’immacolato bianco, dai campi sterpaglie alle officine sbaraccate, dai lacustri marini covi mafio-tangentari alle limpide sorgenti finanziarie era tutto un fremito, uno sfrigolio, una scoppiettante giaculatoria di voci e di nomi sovreccitate e sovreccitanti.
Il carico la difficile impresa dell’elezione non poteva che assumerlo l’esimia ditta B-R, altamente specializzata in nomine e affini. Così, torme di giornalisti, assediavano i corpi del binomio, non appena quelli comparivano, a riempire gli orizzonti, ruotando i lor codazzi di seguaci, guardie e servitorelli. Vero, che altre dittarelle partecipavano ai lavori; ma, in subappalto, sottobanco.
Inutilmente, però, i mondial gazzettieri, come piccioni grassi, famelici, piroettanti acrobatiche circonvoluzioni, o come valchirie vogliose il fuoco sacro di Ockham, protendevano i cilindrici cubici becconi microfonati.
– Non posso parlare. – diceva R, della premiata ditta B-R, gonfiando il petto tosto e la gioventù sagace che imputava alle sue gote una certa, qual discreta, solerte soffusa arroganza. “Lasciatemi consultare prima i miei travetti fantozziani che non è giusto bypassarli lavoran pur essi alla ditta. Presto saprete, stiamo preparando col tempo debito del turbo un nome di velocità superiore, autorevole, responsabile, più rapido del fuso orario. “
Lo stormo, allora planava, più arrabbiato e rapace, sull’altra lettera del binomio, se non la più fresca di gioventù, la più onesta e schietta, saggia di vecchiezza, d’accumulo, laboriosa.
“La sapete l’ultima? “rispondeva, loro, quello, stirando a croce l’estremità delle labbra a mostrar la ghigna estesa fino alla nuca, di nuovo fiorita orbita cappelluta. Poi, già pregustando l’amara delusione degli astanti, profferiva: – Birichini, ve la conterò poi e solo vi posso dire, anche se non è più il primo, sarà un bel pesce d’aprile. –
Così si disperdevan, i professional petulanti, pigolando affranti le loro gazzette con le ipotesi le più variegate su quel nome, bontà del creato.
Poi vennero, d’un passo quasi normale, per nulla turbinoso, i giorni della settimana elettiva.
Ecco quel che vidi avvenire, nel quadriddo, in quei giorni che pure sul momento, fuori di esso, apparvero incoscienti e quieti.
13 aprile
Il professor Antonio Mantino usciva di casa a passo svelto, quasi ginnico, malgrado l’alta pressione, diretto al parco, ché gli occorreva d’accarezzar le membra sull’erba e tra le gigantesche querce distender respiro.
Cricchiava la ghiaia finalmente famiglia sotto i piedi mentre il professore rilesse al cuor suo, tenerezza palpitante, la telefonata.
B. era stato esplicito:
– Sarai il nostro candidato bandiera, che tu sei beneamato dall’elettorato qual fondator di forza italianissima, creator liberista al mercato e tutti t’han sempre udito vantar le libertà mie qual fede tua e non solo predicar garantismo garantista assai garante il posticipato. –
Fin qui s’era nella norma che pur faceva soddisfazione, ma poi di più entusiaste gracchiaron le cellule cellulari soccorrevoli di barzelletta, ben oltre i giacimenti i meriti suoi pur notevole patrimonio.
– Fiducia devi aver, amico mio, nell’impiantito. Ché, se una buferetta, ci passa l’occasione,
diverrai il PdR della situazione della nazione. –
Decisamente era troppo e il professore raccolse la balbettante, in petto, emozione per riporla in sé, a riposar con lui sulla panchina.
Sull’altro estremo di questa era seduto, ma proprio in bilico, che non si sapeva come gli riuscisse quel magico equilibrio, un tipetto grasso, anzi, più che grasso, rotondo; sul capo, piegata a ricoprir, quasi, il giornale che andava leggendo, una berretta, ampia e grigia, svolazzante vezzosi ricami verdeoro. Ricordava, questa, al professore, gli straordinari mutandoni bandiera di nonna Ernestina, scoperti da lui, bambino, durante un’esplorazione furtiva del massiccio canterano avito.
Quel tipo, d’un tratto, s’agitò e buttato il giornale a terra gli saltellava sopra, comicamente irritato. Aveva piedi piccolissimi e la berretta scotoliante su e giù traeva un cinguettio, un concerto, quasi, di passeri felici. Poi gli sorrise, d’una bella boccuccia rosea, appena dischiusa e il professore fu colto da strana suggestione, poiché quella figura gli comunicava una famigliarità antica e promiscua, una sensazione d’affettuosa vicinanza, come se avesse ritrovato un vecchio compagno di studi, con il quale un tempo aveva condiviso strampalati bagordi e significative avventure e le cui tracce s’erano, poi, smarrite nei fondali imprevisti della vita.
– Chi è il suo candidato? – trombettò, all’improvviso, quella boccuccia rosa, ma d’un suono così dolce che il flauto di Pan sarebbe stato, al confronto, come il rombo d’un quadrimotore al decollo.
Il professore, fu per sciogliersi, liquida, amniotica panna, là, sulla panchina.
– Io! – avrebbe voluto prorompere: – Io! – lasciando che il suo cuore si spalancasse finalmente all’eruzione lavica di quell’amarezza, multiforme, sedimentata dalla cinica stratificata incostanza di B, che rendeva straniera anche l’amicizia, la più sincera.
Ma, lo trattenne, un pudore senile ed una sorta di disturbo dell’aria che levigava là attorno consistente quasi come tela che premeva il collo e dalla bocca aperta penetrava in gola.
Gli venne da tossire, poi più nulla.
La sera, una clamorosa notizia apriva tutti i telegiornali:
Questo pomeriggio il professor Antonio Mantino è stato trovato morto su di una panchina del parco Sempione, a Milano.
Causa della morte un probabile arresto cardiaco.
L’esimio professore era il candidato al Quirinale di B. Quest’ultimo s’è detto sconvolto.
14 aprile
Il deputato onorevole Pierferdinando Castini sorseggiava il suo tè con la tranquilla soddisfazione dell’uomo in pace con la sua coscienza e che nulla ha da rimproverarsi riguardo agli accidenti che, purtroppo, a volte, capitano dannosamente imprevedibili ed imprevisti ai pur non, comuni, mortali.
Un poco gli rincresceva. Martino non era propriamente un amico, ma avevano condiviso battaglie liberal-cristiane importanti; battaglie che certo non avevano segnato la storia della nostra bella Repubblica, epperò, palesarono, nell’azione del governo B, un coraggioso disegno riformista e innovativo. Quali, ad esempio, tanto per citarne qualcuna, la liberalizzazione della vendita, nei supermercati, dei preservativi cinesi con impresso un simpatico porcellino rassomigliante vagamente a B, contento del richiamo a questa sua italianissima, insopprimibile, pruderie carnascialesca (e qui Pier sorrideva, condiscendente, all’ovvia constatazione della sua superiorità giovanil seduttiva sul vecchio arnese in perenne ossessione dello scavalco, malgrado il disarmo).
Proprio B, solo dieci minuti prima, aveva guidato l’assalto alla buvette, di Montecitorio, d’un corteo ansioso d’assistere alla storica – reconquista -, la riappacificazione tra i due.
Dopo anni di reciproca freddezza, come nulla fosse, l’aveva preso sottobraccio, dicendo:
– Pier, offrimi il caffè, che poi ti offro io una bella cosa. – Era quello, il suo solito approccio da compagnone, venditore il cordiale, mentre esibiva malizioso il classico – occhiolino – lasciando affiorare dalla palpebra, sotto il liscio, stirato marmoreo, la sepoltura squamosa dell’antico pellame.
– Poi, carissimo Pier, mi dirai chi, nello scambio, ci avrà guadagnato. –
Era sempre lo stesso: lui che offriva, si prostrava e si sacrificava e dannava per gli amici e per il popolo. Entusiasta, proseguì:
– Pier, tu sarai il nostro Pdr; il povero Martino l’avevo infilato come mossa tattica; una bandiera d’agitare davanti al toro comunista così che vi sbattesse le corna. Purtroppo, lui, ci ha lasciati. E qui non possiamo più giocare con la tattica, sei il nostro centravanti, con te sicuramente facciamo gol e li stendiamo nel primo tempo. Ho in tasca l’accordo con il boy, ti vota sicuramente. –
Ed era là per abbracciarlo, con quel suo puzzo di cerone che penetrava le narici, stomachevole e nauseabondo. Fortuna che a salvarlo era intervenuto il macellaio fiorentino: – Presidente, cerchiamo di non dare troppo sull’occhio. –
Ma chi voleva prendere per il culo. Figurava con R, pappa e ciccia, ma qui la mummia si sbagliava. Stavolta, il pacco, l’aveva apparecchiato lui e confezionato a dovere.
Con R, tramite il Cardinale, s’erano incontrati in un sotterraneo del Vaticano ed intesi subito a meraviglia, due democristiani doc, duri, non cera fasulla, alla Bindi, che si fiutano e studiano come cani di razza e sanno quando azzannarsi e quando conviene spartirsi la preda ( il patto del Cantinone). Calato l’asso – Castini-, sicuro B, che l’altro non l’avrebbe votato, sulla munifica mummia sarebbe piovuta una bella sorpresa. Sogghignò.
– Bravo Pierr, su con la vita! – fraintese, l’impagliato, rifilandogli un’altra pacca sulla spalla.
Non ne poteva più; così castigò le mani, impazienti di stringere quel collo avvizzito e le distese incollate al bancone, poi si girò, lentamente, a guardarlo, ostentando la massima deferenza, (generazioni di scuola gesuitica avranno pure insegnato qualcosa sul dominio di sé e lo stacco dal mondo nei momenti critici)
– Grazie, B. – disse, con un sorriso perfettamente grato e servile. – Saprò come sdebitarmi, al momento opportuno. –
Era quel che la mummia s’aspettava e finalmente se ne andarono lui e il suo rumoroso codazzo e Pierferdinando poté rilassarsi.
Purtuttavia, gli parlava dal fondo, un brontolio, lieve di stomaco, che s’avvicinava e cresceva, come quando il temporale s’annuncia per scoppi secchi e brevi, echi di un’esplosione che si sarebbe sicuramente avverata potente e fragorosa.
– Bip bip – ritmò il cellulare, sommando, a quell’eco di natura, un suono d’artificio. – Stai sereno! – diceva l’sms di R e poiché l’arte d’una cultura preveggente l’aveva sempre abituato, in politica, come nella vita, all’autodisciplina, che aveva nella meticolosa prevenzione il suo codice virtuoso (vero e proprio mantra guerresco), s’avviò deciso al bagno mentre le contrazioni, che pur crescevano dolorose, non bastavano a limitare l’allegrezza del suo spirito, in quegli attimi, assai fervida e pungolosa.
Davanti alla toilette degli uomini, un connubio di murafavilla e di marmi luxottica, svettava, ricurva, la Gioconda. Il corpo energico, piegato lievemente, distendeva lo straccio ad ampie eleganti ritmiche campate, che parevano falciare un rigoglioso campo di grano.
– Sei sempre tu, Pierfi. – protestò la donna, con un vago accento tosco- franco emiliano, senza dismettere tuttavia la parvenza granitica e pur armoniosa del suo lavoro.
– Scusami, Gioconda – replicò umilmente, le mani, come casualmente, sulla pancia, il probabile nuovo Pierfi Pdr, futuro signore di ben altro più prezioso palazzo.
– Va bene. – sbuffò lei materna e comprensiva, nella voce un che d’affettuosa protezione, del resto si conoscevano da anni con quel bambinone, seppur cresciutello, caruccio assai.
– Però, mi raccomando, – soggiunse a mo’ di minaccia scherzosa – c’ ho appena lavato. –
Pier, si stava sempre più raggomitolando su sé stesso, come se un’interna molla richiamasse, verso il geometrico punto centrale, le sue estreme. Senza por mezzo ad altro indugio si slanciò entro quel luogo, se non dispensatore di delizie, certo depositario delle loro ciangottanti conseguenze e subitaneo, liberatisi dagli ingombri volò, al sedere, il suo sedere.
Neppure, ancor, cessata era quella particolar pioggia dell’infinito, che già risaliva dal suo spirito il brivido beato della divina rilassatezza. Così, pensò al molteplice, a quel che di buono e bello avrebbe fatto, là, sull’alto colle ed ancora si sentì buono e bello, tra un coro d’ angeli, come il lontano giorno della prima comunione.
Avvertì, ad un tratto, un’altra naturalità, come una perfezione assoluta che, leggiadra e rotonda, s’elevava, volteggiante, sopra di lui.
– Pierfi – chiamò, spazientita, la Gioconda – hai fatto? –
A mezzogiorno, l’Ansa, sparò una notizia straordinaria:
Il deputato onorevole Pierferdinando Castini trovato morto nel bagno del Parlamento.
Si suppone un arresto cardiaco.
Altri particolari non vennero forniti, ma abbondarono le lodi per una lunga, gloriosa, meritevole carriera politica.
B, si sperticò in attestati sulla loro amicizia: era stata profonda, sincera, pregna della reciproca stima quanto poche altre. E, com’era della sua generosa natura, non lesinò corone di fiori e biglietti di condoglianze, da spartirsi equamente tra le due vedove.
R, ricordò il loro ultimo incontro, a Palazzo Chigi, celebrando lo statista scomparso nel mezzo della maturità delle sue straordinarie civiche virtù, il cui apporto rivolto ad accrescere la velocità innovatrice e riformista, di questa stagione, sicuramente non avrebbe fatto mancare.
Un editoriale, del Corriere della Sera, scrisse, tra l’altro, nel suo commento:
Cresce un sottile sconcerto attorno a questo succedersi di tragici eventi. Due, tra i più prestigiosi candidati Pdr, uomini di valori saldi e di principi non comuni, nel volger di soli due giorni, sono imprevedibilmente scomparsi. La nazione, smarrita e disorientata, s’interroga nella speranza che l’avvento di tempi futuri, torbidi, inquieti ed incerti, non ci costringeranno, irrimediabilmente, a rimpiangerli.
Mercoledì 15 aprile
– Roma nun fa’ la stupida stasera – canticchiava il professor Giulivo Amato, felice, che del resto con quel nome e cognome come poteva non esserlo intanto che stava sopra Paolina, su e giù andante di qua e pure di là, in pendoloculetto oscillante secondo precise coordinate di tempo e spazio, suggeritegli dai trattati erotico-francesi del diciottesimo secolo.
Trattavasi, la sua, della sua pignolesca – sveltina – mattutina, logicamente ritmata dagli squittii il piacere di lei: – Oh, oh Giuli che bella… chee beella… – rantolanti dal dispensario le teche aggreganti, talvolta, se non sempre, il cuore.
Pure, Paolina, era affezionata al – suo topino -; come lei lo chiamava, quando v’era necessità di bussar cassa, ché il risplendente attico, rifiorente la movimentata scogliera dei tetti di Roma, assieme al bel vedere fioriva anche un bel po’ di spese. Allora, stropicciando le elefantiache orecchie del suo topino, prolungava e moltiplicava la musicalità degli: – oh… ooh… oooh…. – giustapponendovi l’esplorazione in punta di lingua leggera di quel naso caraffa, che neppure un Cyrano avrebbe potuto lodare.
Ma, quella mattina, mentre lui, finito svelto la sveltina e le cinquanta successive, obbligatorie, flessioni, ripassava la relazione di non so qual conferenza sull’importanza del punto e virgola nelle Costituzioni, lei, per riferire quella cosa che sapeva per lui d’una qualche importanza, si levò dal letto, alta, alta, quant’era lei la bella ragazza brasiliana, nera d’occhi e capelli e di labbra rosse burrose ed ondeggiante come un giunco, una lunga lunga canna flessuosa la carnale America del Sud, se lo soffocò affettuosa al petto, più precisamente al ventre, ché lui più su non ci arrivava.
– Topino – sospirarono quelle sue labbra materia di fata – questa notte è mandato R il messaggino che tu aspettato. Vero? –
Come inchiappettato dal pizzico d’un frate cappuccino balzò il professore, su, fin quasi all’altezza del mento di lei e là vi rimase, sospesa sorpresa, d’occhi sbarrati.
– Perché non me l’hai detto, Paolina?- la rimproverò, però d’un rimprovero amorevolmente amoroso, senza rancore c’ anzi v’era per certo nel -messaggino- finalmente la consacrazione, quasi inverato corpo giuridico, la sua speranza. Tanto ch’ebbe, abbacinante, un’illuminazione:
Si vide trotterellar, marziale, al suono fanfaresco, in parata del 2 giugno, tra cascate d’ applausi ed evviva, nel tripudio di bandiere, entusiaste, piuma al vento avanti il plotone dei bersaglieri.
– Paolina, oggi, devi assolutamente comprare un cappello di bersagliere. –
– Un capello de che? –
– Lascia stare. Piuttosto, amore, dovevi svegliarmi. Che c’è scritto in questo messaggino? –
– Giulivo, tu russavo beato. Aspetto… c’è scritto B vuole…aspetto, mi ricordo nome .. –
Saltò e risaltellò sul letto, infantilmente felice, le braccia levate alte, come volesse quel nome trarlo giù, pioggia di piume, a cascar dal soffitto.
– Ecco qua… -, esultò battendo soddisfatta le mani; poi schioccò quel nome: – Ma..zza..re.lllà! – strascicando le lettere quasi esalassero, lenta, una frustata.
– Mazzarellà? – tradusse e stupì lui.
– Mazzarella? Ripeté, sconcertato. Ma, fu solo un attimo, perché poi realizzò subitanea la nera vera traccia di quel cognome e fu una botta che cancellò non solo visione il pregustato trionfo, ma anche quella rarefatta, depuratoria, assai coltivata flemma english che da sempre, nei difficult moment, lo contraddistingueva.
– Muttarella, c’è scritto Muttarella. Sei una stupida, una cretina, una deficiente! – l’aggredì sgarbato, tanto che lei non se la tenne. Aveva il suo orgoglio, lei, mica stava biscara de Roma capoccia labbra e mutanda lecca-lecca. Così, afferrato il cellulare, si bilanciò, come una professionista del lancio del giavellotto e accompagnandolo con un grido di guerra:
– Guardolo tu intelligenza scema che sei. -, lo scagliò a colpire quel crine di saggezza bianco grigia.
S’abbatté Giulivo, colpito all’occipite, come Ettore sotto le mura di Troia.
Là sotto, disteso nella polvere, lesse la sua sconfitta:
“B, ha cambiato idea, propone Muttarella. Non chiedermi come mai, non lo so. R “. E leggendo moriva, poi, rabbioso e ferito, resuscitava.
Un vero affronto, a lui, proprio a lui membro onorario del Comitato Scienze Balcaniche; Giudice Costituzionale; Consigliere l’Associazione “Tutela il Moscone Calabrese “; Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri, due volte; Ministro del Tesoro, due volte; Ministro dell’Interno, una volta sola, ma la seconda declinata per impegni.
Gesticolava, non poco, come i barboni chiusi in sé preda dei loro ricordi, tra la curiosità dei rari passanti, mentre attraversava, in quella gelida giornata di aprile, Ponte Milvio, sotto il quale il Tevere scorreva corrusco e partecipe la sua sacrosanta indignazione.
Affluivano alla coscienza, tumultuosi e disordinati, come reperti sospinti dalla corrente del Tevere, gli altri suoi meriti:
Docente Universitario; Titolare quattro pensioni; Vicepresidente del Consiglio dei Ministri; Presidente la fondazione “Ildebrando Imberciadori”; Presidente l’Istituto Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani; Presidente la scuola superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa; Consulente, per l’Italia, della Deutsche Bank; Presidente del Comitato Estensore la Costituzione Europea; Presidente della bocciofila di Carugate e Presidente Tennis Club di Brembate Brianza.
Ed ancora, ancora scintillanti titoli, brulicanti benemerenze, sbrodolanti onorificenze, fino a ieri dimenticate ed ora a surriscaldar superficie focosa le meningi: C’era, forse, qualcuno più degno di lui della carica PdR? Perché sottrargliela? Neppure i Cinquestelle si sarebbero potuti negare ad un curriculum talmente così sbalorditivo da edificare un massiccio monumentale.
Ah, ma non sarebbe finita qui, che si credevano? Giulivo Amato non era uomo da piegarsi davanti ad un – Muttarella – qualsiasi. Avrebbe saputo lui come smottar, rimestar la fanghigia di certe carrierucce politiche compulsive ideuzze sbragate. Aveva, o no, anche praticato la Presidenza l’Autorità garante la concorrenza sul Mercato?
Si guardava attorno, furtivo: ma sul lungotevere non v’era anima viva e la Roma di quella gelida mattina di gennaio pareva tutta ritrattasi partecipe il suo immeritato, protocollare, dolore.
Rapido attraversò il piccolo pontile e varcò l’ingresso del Club Canottieri Tevere sommerso da un silenzio carico nera tensione.
Loro, V, il grande giornalista ed L, il proconsole cardinalizio di B, lo stavano già aspettando e l’abbracciarono, solidali.
– Giulivo, non so come sia potuto succedere. – Si scusò subito il proconsole. Era d’un pallore diafano che gli arrotava gli zigomi in aguzze sporgenze. – È un periodo parecchio difficile per lui. Sai, non va più di corpo: ne in un senso, ne nell’altro. Sarà la frequentazione di quei vecchietti ai servizi sociali. –
Amato Giulivo levigò, tentennanti, le sue antenne sugli occhietti, strizzatura vampiresca, del grande giornalista. Era costui, nel segreto, gongolante, poiché stava a raccoglier materiali sui probabili trombati l’elezione e qui, a sciroppar delusione davanti a lui, v’era uno tra i più perfetti esemplari, di quelli, presto a strascicar le interiora conserva del sopravvissuto. Così avrebbe potuto uno scoop, di quelli che, ancor vivente, l’avevano decorato gaudiosa parte l’Olimpo gazzettiere.
– Son così dispiaciuto per te, Giulivo. – lo solleticava, mellifluo. – Se posso far qualcosa, non hai che da chiedermela. Hai visto, son corso al tuo soccorso, il bisogno d’un amico è per me dovere e tu lo sai. – Ronzava, intanto, il piccolo registratore l’agguato, nella sua saccoccia, pronto a raccattar il comatoso sfogo dello sconfitto.
Commosse Giulivo questa testimonianza d’amor fraterno. – Perché, lui – irruento, s’accese – lui, m’è fratello. Entrambi ci occupiamo della Legge, la più grande. Ma, insomma, ci sarà pure qualche notiziola, qualche sbavo, qualche ombrina, non dico a smerdolar che non è il tuo stile, almeno una spuria puzzetta che lo faccia retrocedere di graduatoria, suggerendo al contempo il mio nome, con discrezione, patente di nocchiera qualità, cauta, occhiuta navigazione.-
Il giornalista assentiva, comprensivo e assertivo che si sarebbe buttato subito sull’impegno esplorativo, ma intanto gli urlava l’anima, goduriosa la pappagorgia che costui gli apparecchiava. Certo nessun prospetto plastico del luogo qui, purtroppo, non c’era sangue, ma avrebbe saputo lui crear scena al titolo (- Ambizione e tradimento, poteva andare) d’un bel melò, ché sempre, quello, tira in televisione.
– Non saprei dire se tutto ciò possa servire all’amico qui, Giulivo. – Intervenne, annaspante sussurro, L – Perché le illazioni indiscrete – qui, il suo roco ansimare si tramutò pura sofferenza, quasi quella della – Forza Oscura interstellare.- Queste illazioni, – riprese l’ombra peripatetica di B – hanno stabilito che a non volerti Pdr sia R. L’avrai visto cosa non dicono anche le televisioni che tu con quel poco di curricula che ti ritrovi gli faresti assai bell’ombra a B soprattutto sull’aspetto qualitativo il brandy internazionale. –
Tacque, alfine, roco e stanco il sussurro del minuto proconsole sagrestile, mentre Giulivo si chiedeva perché mai costui non si fosse fatto prete, ché con questo suo sussurrar roco, papa, lo sarebbe stato per certo, nella nobile tradizione dei papi cesari, offrir dolcetti con mani inguantate veleni.
In quella, l’impiantito in legno, che sotto i lor piedi già tremolava inquieto per il fiume e la congiura, ricevette una scossa che l’inclinò sbattendo lor sembianze alle pareti d’un gran frastuono di membra frante. Temette il – perpetuo – televisivo che nella saccoccia il zanzarone si fosse inceppato e s’acquattò nell’angolo più protetto a controllare. Là, già sostava un signore, bello, rotondo e basso, che non si capiva se perché accucciato, o per natura. E lo guardava sorridendogli dolcemente. Aveva due guanciotte tonde e piene, forse per via del freddo un poco arrossate, ma lisce, così lisce che V fu tentato il carezzarle ed a stento si trattenne.
– Non funziona più? – chiese cortese il signore a V, d’una voce dolcissima, quale mai aveva udita, ma insolitamente famigliare, alludendo all’apparecchietto che quello s’era portato all’orecchio a controllare.
– Inconvenienti del mestiere. – Rispose, amaro, V, pur nella delusione irresistibilmente affascinato dalla prossimità di quella dolcezza rotonda e voglioso il stringerla a sé. Sentiva anche esultar la sua passione il desidiato ricamo del racconto popolare giacché vedeva su quelle guanciotte, ch’eran sicuramente d’un potente che se no non si spiegava la sua attrazione, due belle tendine, dalla frangia immacolata, spalancarsi a mostrarle in televisione.
– Posso chiederle cosa fa lei, se non sono troppo indiscreto? – disse, d’impeto precipitoso. – Forse lei è un gran chirurgo plastico. Si vede da questa pelle così liscia. –
– Vuole toccarla? – disse, l’altro, condiscendente.
– Posso? –
– Ma si, s’accomodi. –
V porse la mano timorosa a sfiorar quella pelle che appariva ancor più rosea ed incantevole.
– E un pizzico? –
Sorrise, quello, infinita, assai, dolcezza e lievitò miracolosa florida tondezza in bilico sulla staccionata. Si sporse, V, d’impeto audace. Sotto il fiume urlava.
Alle ore 11, 40 l’agenzia Ansa rilasciò questa notizia:
Incidente sul lungotevere presso il club Canottieri Tevere. Forse due morti.
Alle 11,50 tutte le agenzie confermarono i due morti. Ancora sconosciuti, si ipotizzava un incidente dovuto al cedimento di uno dei pali conficcati nel letto del fiume.
Nei lanci successivi le agenzie lasciavano supporre la presenza, al momento dell’incidente, di un terzo uomo.
Alle 12,15 il tg uno aprì con un’edizione straordinaria: I morti del Club Canottieri Tevere erano Giulivo Amato e L, gran segretario e factotum di B.
Alle 12,30 sempre il tg uno edizione straordinaria annunciò che i morti avrebbero potuto essere tre. Lo testimoniava una signora, che, dal palazzo al di là della strada proprio di fronte al club Canottieri Tevere, aveva visto un uomo precipitare nel fiume.
Intanto, tre erano divenuti anche i papabili Pdr morti.
La faccenda cominciava ad assumere un aspetto piuttosto inquietante.
La ditta BR, assalita dal solito stormo, non sembrava preoccupata. Sicuramente una grave perdita per il paese (non per l’Inps, puntualizzò una giornalista subito tacciata di cinismo), ma disponevano ancora di molte frecce al loro arco, soprattutto, una, che preferivano al momento non rivelare.
Muttarella e Padovan comparvero in televisione a smentire le loro candidature. Durante l’intervista a ottoemezzo, Padovan mantenne, come distrattamente, la mano sotto la scrivania; mentre Muttarella rimase mani congiunte, occhi al cielo, un atteggiamento di supplice preghiera.
16 aprile
La signora senatrice Anna Maria Paola Luigia Filochiaro nella tiepida mattina di aprile usciva dal signorile palazzo, vogliosa di passi nei piedi. Si sentiva una molla compressa, la tensione di quei giorni, la morte di Mantino, Giulivo e Pierfi, rischiava di farle saltare le coronarie. Lei non era superstiziosa, ma era pur sempre una siciliana e un millennio di diavolerie scaramantiche s’erano depositate sul suo DNA pronte a sciogliersi saltellandole d’intorno i rimedi più strambi. Prevalse il di lei ghiaccio razionale così decise a compromesso una preghierina, nulla di male se questa avesse evocata protezione d’una qualsiasi tra le potenze celesti. Nei pressi c’era la chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi e vi s’infilò svelta senza dare nell’occhio, mischiandosi ad alcune vecchiette, non prima di aver congedato gli agenti della scorta, mancava l’accusassero di averli obbligati a pregare al posto suo, dopo lo scandalo della scorta obbligata alla spesa, per lei, al supermercato.
S’inginocchiò in un angolo buio, da dove poteva osservare, senza che la si notasse, il grande affresco della “Chiamata di San Matteo” del Caravaggio e prese a bisbigliare, nel modo ripetitivo e frenetico d’una qualsiasi bizzoca, la sua domanda di grazia:
– Gesùgiuseppemaria fammi prima donna PdR della storia. Perché non Io: intelligente, onesta, sensibile, parca di costumi e trasparente d’intelletto?
GesùGiuseppeMaria fallo per l’anima mia e così sia! –
Mentre così pregava a fianco, s’inginocchiò, meglio si posò un tipo strano, piccolo e grasso, rotondo più che grasso e Anna Maria Paola Luigia ebbe l’impressione che le sorridesse. Anche lei gli sorrise e senza cessare il pio e devoto bisbiglio, mormorò: – Ma tu sei… –
Si persero le ultime sillabe nel buio della chiesa, mentre lei reclinava il capo ed un sorriso le si allargava, rifiorendolo beato e sereno, sul bel viso.
Quando la figlia lo chiamò, per quell’urgenza, il commissario Antonio Parascandola, del distretto di polizia di Montecitorio, stava assaporando alla finestra, la tiepida e serena mattinata romana, mentre, razionalista, ma anche superstizioso, parlava con il gatto e con la moglie morta, che sempre a quell’ora veniva a trovarlo per sfotterlo, amabilmente.
– Mo che te ne torni a Procida – diceva lei, proprio in quel momento, seduta alle sue spalle nella poltrona preferita – a me non mi vedrai più, con tutte le belle procidane che ti staranno appresso.- La figlia, che gli voleva un gran bene e temeva che una volta in pensione la malinconia lo avrebbe incupito, lo scosse e tirandolo per la giacchetta bloccò la sua convinta protesta di diniego verso la dipartita consorte.
Mancavano pochi giorni alla sospirata pensione e quel caso proprio non ci voleva. Due baffi bianchi, il fisico minuto, ma ancora energico, anche se fiaccato da un’antica ferita ad una gamba ricevuta in servizio che lo portava a zoppicare leggermente, non vedeva l’ora di andarsene dopo che, nell’accerchiamento progressivo al malaffare, le sconfitte, molto più numerose delle vittorie, avevano ristretto parecchio le sue ambizioni rendendolo laicamente sobrio rispetto al problematico storico contenzioso tra legge e giustizia.
Escluse le vecchine, che non valeva proprio la pena d’interrogare, i testimoni, una ragazza francese, una coppia inglese, un prete spagnolo, un professore tedesco, tutti concordavano sulla presenza, nella chiesa, di un altro misterioso personaggio. Piccolo, rotondo, rosso, una barba bianca, senza barba, un cappello a cilindro, un berretto rosso, più che camminare scivolava, anzi, forse saltellava.
Ed aveva parlato con tutti loro, con inflessione perfetta delle loro lingue, anche se nella, di lui, pronuncia risuonavano arcaiche, come risalenti da lontananze remote.
A mezzogiorno le agenzie batterono la notizia straordinaria del ritrovamento nella chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi del corpo della senatrice Anna Maria Paola Luigia Filochiaro.
17 aprile
Il magistrato incaricato delle indagini, un giovanotto presuntuoso e ambizioso, liquidati i dubbi del commissario Parascandola, dovuti alla presenza nella chiesa del misterioso personaggio, consigliandolo, anche, di affrettarsi alla pensione, parlò della povera signora Anna Maria Paola Luigia con una punta di compassata, compartecipe compunzione. Davanti a lui, fremeva impaziente la torma furiosa dei giornalisti, alcuni dei quali, appollaiati, come piccioni, persino sui tetti.
– Non sono psicologo, ma si sa quel che succede in questi casi. – disse pavoneggiandosi e strascicando le parole per stenderle bene sopra i microfoni, associandole alla sua sana fresca figura di giovanotto privo di pregiudizi, perciò, capace di dipanar la matassa, non solo di questo caso, ma anche dei precedenti.
– L’emozione tira la tiroide e il plesso si chiude bucando il respiro. L’atmosfera mistica e gli sbalzi di temperatura di queste giornate hanno fatto il resto. Non dovete credere che non succeda, perché succede e questa è la dimostrazione. Avete ben visto quel che è capitato al professor Mantino, al povero Pierfi – permettetemi un cincinnino di commozione, lo conoscevo il povero Pierfi,- e ancora al Professor Amato Giulivo, ch’era già morto prima che crollasse il club. È un’epidemia d’ansia che colpisce i papabili, infatti come ben sapete è capitato anche ad un Papa, e li stende poverini sul letto diaccio della morte. Anzi, non escluderei che possa succedere ancora a qualcun altro. –
18 aprile

Sono stati, e saranno, assassinati da crisi d’ansia patogene.
Mentre il palazzo era in subbuglio la ditta BR cominciava a preoccuparsi.
Naturali, o no, che fossero quelle morti, bene avevano fatto a segretare il nome vero del vero candidato.
20 aprile
Nel giorno tanto atteso, Montecitorio era un fremito di animale ferito che si dibatteva, a sussulti, ad ondate che sbatacchiavano qua e là, la massa frammista di deputati e senatori contro le pareti stuccate rischiando di graffiarne i contorni barocchi.
C’erano già stati colpi di scena, candidati della Parrocchietta, ma non fedelissimi di R, erano stati asfaltati, mentre B ed R si lanciavano languidi sguardi d’intesa.
Quando, nell’ultimo scrutinio, la Presidente della Camera Laura Boldrini cominciò a leggere le schede, man mano che procedeva il mormorio s’acquietò fino a dissolversi del tutto.
Se mai le mosche entrano a Montecitorio si poteva affermare con certezza che non ne volasse neppure una. La stessa Presidente della Camera, mentre, aperta la scheda, scandiva il nome, sempre monotonamente lo stesso, denotava nella voce un che di ricurvo e stanco, una rassegnata indelebile meraviglia che faceva si che scivolasse sull’ultima sillaba di quel nome: – NO –, come fosse al contempo l’espressione d’una stupefatta negazione. Alla fine, non poté che recitare, in quell’atmosfera diaccia e rarefatta, la formula di rito:
Proclamo rieletto dodicesimo Presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano.
Nel silenzio assoluto si udì picchiettare sul prezioso lastricato un bastone e il vecchio venne avanti ricurvo ed ansimante, mentre sul viso grinzoso brillavano, fresche, come quelle d’un mandarino cinese, le guance porporine tremolanti il vago scintillio d’un sardonico mefistofelico sorrisetto.
I grandi elettori si scrutavano l’un l’altro, gli sguardi interroganti e raggelati, come ignari di quel ch’era testé accaduto, come se ciascuno l’avesse votato a sua insaputa.
Unici ad esultare e ad abbracciarsi, senza ritegno, B ed R ed uno strano individuo, rosso e rotondo, con una berretta, anch’essa rossa, o forse bianca, che precipitatosi giù dai palchi del pubblico saltellava, preda d’ incontenibile gioia, sopra le teste di deputati e senatori, quasi fossero state rocce emergenti da un torrente in piena. Su cosa somigliasse non v’era alcun dubbio.
Questo quello che vidi nel “quadriddo”. Non importa se nella cosiddetta realtà qualche particolare non coincideva, sapevo che quel che avevo visto era vero, vero nel profondo per l’essenza stessa delle cose. E per l’incontro che ebbi ritornando a Procida, il 30 aprile.
Ero sul ponte e guardavo l’isola dopo tanti anni, con una stretta al cuore, emergere da effluvi rosati come un miraggio fiabesco, un incantesimo evocato da Morgana. Attorno a me il ponte era del tutto deserto e saliva dal mare un respiro quasi giocoso. Fu allora che, con nobile fierezza, lui, mi si presentò.
Era sicuramente lui, come poi l’avrei visto nel quadriddo: rosso e rotondo e come descritto dai miei testimoni, con una berretta rossa, o forse bianca.
– Lei si sta tormentando sulla mia identità – disse, con quella sua voce, che confermo dolcissima – e poiché m’è nota la sua buona fede e la sua dedizione alla verità ho deciso di rivelarmi.
Io sono colui che sta ovunque, in ogni essere e in ogni luogo, ma relegato in funzioni accessorie, per quanto importanti. Il Gran Consiglio delle Ianare di Procida m’ha evocato, liberandomi.
Ce n’est q’un debut, è appena l’inizio, finalmente posso contribuire a cambiare questo paese e non più subire l’accusa, infamante, di voler soltanto la poltrona.
– Ho capito, – dissi, io – tu sei il… –
– Fermo là non nominare il mio nome invano e in mia presenza, se no sei morto, come quegli altri. Chiamami Charlie. Je suis Charlie, au revoir, à tout à l’heure, monsieur. –
E la misteriosa, ma oramai acclarata creatura si lasciò cadere dal parapetto per poi allontanarsi, sospinta dalle onde e da un filo di sottile bianco vapore, in direzione del Miseno.
Poi io, pur se vecchio, o forse proprio per quello, dell’Araba mi sono innamorato, ma quel che mi accadde è un’altra storia. D’altra parte, veggenti, come l’Araba, saranno in futuro scomparse, rendendo pressoché impossibile la comprensione di certi accadimenti. Per questo, ho deciso, colpa forse anche la deformazione professionale e le sollecitazioni della mia defunta moglie e di mia figlia di scrivere, ad un anno dai fatti, questa testimonianza, a futura memoria. Ho però preferito tutelare i miei cari, i potenti è risaputo sono vendicativi, alterando leggermente i nomi, riconoscibilissimi del resto da chiunque abbia una minima famigliarità con le cronache di questi nostri tempi disastrati.

1) Un piccolo quadro, non sempre incorniciato, ma quasi sempre protetto da un vetro che ricopre la reliquia centrale, il velo della Madonna, abbellito da ricami, inserzioni di paillettes, strass, piccoli coralli, decorazioni di carta argentata e da una infinità di altri minuscoli ornamenti che hanno in comune, sovente, la capacità di riflettere la luce. La lettura è un rituale meticoloso e il suo scopo è recare conforto a chi la richiede: una moglie in attesa di un marito lontano, una fidanzata preoccupata per la salute del suo futuro sposo. E spesso, se la rivelazione è infausta, nel tentativo di proteggere l’altra donna, essa non viene rivelata e viene tenuta per sé come un pesante fardello.
